This database is from the California Department of Public Health, and originally entitled California Birth Index. The descriptive information here is adapted from their website. More information about the database may be available there.A birth record can be one of the most helpful sources of information you can discover, even though these records are often hard to find and incomplete. At a minimum an ancestor’s birth record will usually include the first name, surname, and date of birth (although some records have only the child’s surname and date of birth).  More modern records are often more detailed and may include the following information: the child’s first and last name, gender, birth date and location, parents’ names and the attending doctor’s name.

This database contains an index of birth registers in California for the years 1905-1995. This dataset contains the following information: name, gender, date and place of birth, and mother’s surname. Before 1905, birth registration was not required. Records are not stored as birth certificates, but as abstracts of them. Copies of the original records can be ordered from California Department of Public Health.
